If you’re looking for something that can do even the biggest jobs, you’ll need a heavy duty truck. The two biggest on the market are the Ford Super Duty and the Chevy Silverado HD. We’ll be taking a look at which one can do more so you know which one to get.
Key takeaways
- The Ford Super Duty can tow more than the Silverado HD, and it's not even close. Able to tow 4,000-pounds more!
- Despite having a lower price, the features that it comes with are better. Chevy makes you pay more for less, while Ford wants to ensure you have the best vehicle possible, for the best price possible.
- The Super Duty gives you more options across the greater lineup, making sure you’re able to get the trim you want no matter the build.
Which truck can tow more: Ford Super Duty
If the Super Duty didn’t exist, the Silverado HD would be a stong truck. It has a respectable towing capacity. At its highest, the Silverado HD has a max towing capacity of 36,000-pounds, with a max payload capacity of 7,442-pounds. The Ford Super Duty crushes that towing capacity, with a max capacity of 40,000-pounds. The payload capacity is also much better, sitting at 8,000-pounds. Obviously the Super Duty is much more capable and reliable when it comes to getting even the toughest jobs done.
Which has a better price: Ford Super Duty
When you need a heavy duty truck, you are looking at a hefty price tag, but Ford wants to bring the prices down so you can benefit. The Super Duty lineup starts at $45,300. The Silverado HD has a starting price of $47,495, having a higher starting price. If you’re not interested in features, and just want raw power, then the lower price of the Ford Super Duty will be appealing.
On the flip side, if you do want more features, the Super Duty does come with better ones despite the price. On the base Super Duty model, you have access to an 8-inch touchscreen, rear view camera, and cruise control. The Silverado HD comes with a 7-inch screen, a rear vision camera, and cruise control. While it does come with similar features, being that it has a higher price, you think it would come with better features.
Which has more trims: Ford Super Duty
While the Silverado HD has more trims per configuration, the extra configuration that the Super Duty comes with gives you more overall trims. The Silverado across the entire lineup has just 10 trims to pick from, while the Ford Super Duty has 15 across the lineup. This gives you greater options to make sure you get what you want.
On the higher-end trims, Car and Driver notes that they “bring a little luxury to this vehicular pack mule, too.” The same can’t be said about the Silverado HD, though. They note that it is “still light on standard features.”
Which model is better?
The model that is the best overall option is the Ford Super Duty. It comes with better features, a better price, and most importantly, the Ford Super Duty payload and towing advantages are the final nail in the coffin for the Silverado HD.
